What is a food hygiene rating?

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) is run by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) with local authorities. After an inspection, a business is given a rating from 5 (Very Good) down to 0 (Urgent Improvement Necessary), based on how hygienically food is handled, the condition of the premises, and how well the business manages food safety. In Scotland the equivalent Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS) shows Pass or Improvement Required instead of a number.

HygieneCheck makes this public data easy to search and compare. Every business, area and business type has its own page, with the official rating, the inspection date and how it compares with the local average. Read our methodology or learn what each rating means.
